“When we expand our awareness, strengthen our center, clarify our purpose, transform our inner demons, develop our will and make conscious choices, we are moving toward deeper connection with our spiritual self.” ~Molly Young Brown
This sounds like a lot to do. When I first read it I thought, “I’m exhausted just thinking of all these tasks–how can I do this every day?” But this is less a to-do list for spiritual wellbeing, and more a mission statement for life. We will fully connect with our highest self when we leave this worldly existence. Until then, our work it to understand what that means in the realm of our physical life here on Earth.
Still too much? Let’s break it down and my hope is that we’ll all see that connecting with the divine within us is a way of life, not an end result.
~ Expand our awareness: let go of ego and focus your attention on the world around you. Slow down enough to hear the song of the birds. Smile at a stranger. Recognize that your place here is so different from those on the other side of the world, yet we’re all equally as precious and important.
~Strengthen our center: Life moves so fast, and our obligations feel so vast. It is easy to get whipped up in the dust storm and just drop at the end of the day. Pause, breathe slowly into your belly, exhale. Now do that again. Step outside and feel your feet rooted to the ground. Reach your chin toward the sky and feel the expanse of the sky. Get out of your head and in to your heart.
~Clarify your purpose: This one is definitely not easy. So many of us are seeking what our true purpose is. Don’t worry about this answer–keep it simple. What about a purpose of “operating from a place of love.” As you move through your day, ask yourself if you’re making choices based in love or fear. Listen with love. Speak with love. Act with love. If this is your purpose each day, you can’t go wrong.
~Transform your inner demons: Whatever is inside you that tells you that you are not worthy, that make you feel shame, that make you question your value–let them go. Forgive. Soften. You are made of love and you deserve a life of happiness and fulfillment. Don’t carry those demons with you today–decide that you are dropping them here and now, and take the next step forward without those burdens.
~Develop our will and make conscious choices: The quality of our lives depends on the quality of our choices. As individuals we make decisions constantly throughout our days. Be mindful. Listen to the little voice within when it tells you something is not in alignment with your values or your goals. Take ownership in your life and stop surrendering your power to anything outside of the love within you.
This feels more manageable to me, and it gives me a springboard from which to start each day. We never know what is going to be thrown at us but with this as our guide we’re sure to handle it all with grace.
Happy New Year!
